Dr. Kuhlman has been injecting Botulinum Toxins (Botox) since 1996 for a variety of neuromuscular conditions such as spasticity following brain or spinal cord injury, cervical dystonia, chronic migraine headache, etc.   Botulinum Toxin injections for these medical conditions are usually covered by insurance.  Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) of the hands and axilla and Raynaud's Disease are occasionally covered by insurance.

Botulinum Toxin type A for treatment of facial wrinkles is a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance.  At Physical and Aesthetic Medicine, we use three types of Botulinum Toxin type A: Botox®, Xeomin® and Dysport, all of which are FDA approved for treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?

The injected toxin works by blocking the release of a neurotransmitter necessary for muscles to contract.  The injected muscle does not fully contract, so the skin overlying it does not crease.  This reduces/eliminates wrinkles already present and also prevents new wrinkles from forming.  Botulinum Toxin can prevent sweating by blocking the neurotransmitter that causes sweat glands to produce sweat, and can cause a brow lift by partially paralyzing the muscle that pulls the brow down.

What is cosmetic Botulinum Toxin used for?

  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Brow lift
  • Lower eyelid jelly roll
  • Dimpling of the chin
  • Horizontal neck lines
  • Glabellar frown lines
  • Bunny/wolf lines
  • Nasal tip elevation
  • Perioral (smoker’s) lines
  • Raynaud’s
  • Crow’s feet
  • Gummy smile
  • Down turned mouth
  • Platysmal bands
  • Underarm perspiration

Is the treatment comfortable?

There is minimal discomfort as a very small 30-gauge needle is used for the injections.  Anesthesia typically is not required with the exception of smoker’s lines that are pretreated with topical anesthetic cream.  Rarely, there is a small amount of bleeding but you should be able to return to work immediately after the injections.

When will I see results and how long will it last?

Facial wrinkles start to reduce in a few days.  The results should last three to four months.  Repeated injections can help prevent facial wrinkles in the future.

How much does it cost?

The costs vary depending upon how much Botulinum Toxin is needed.  Frown lines between the eyes will cost approximately $170 for most people.
