What are PDO Threads?

PDO threads are hypodermic needles preloaded with an absorbable suture.  PDO stands for Polydioxanone. It is a synthetic absorbable surgical suture that has been used in surgery for decades. It is one of the safest materials to be implanted in the body. Your body fully absorbs it within 4 to 6 months, but the suture stimulates collagen production that can rejuvenate your skin for 6 to 18 months.

How does it work?

The PDO thread is inserted with a needle. The needle is then removed, leaving the thread in place just under the skin where it can not be seen or felt. The thread is fully absorbable over the next 4 to 6 months. During this time, your body repairs itself around the suture by growing collagen, which strengthens and tightens the skin. There are also large threads that have ‘barbs’, which provide a grip underneath the skin to “lift” your skin to prevent sagging.

What areas of the body can be treated?

PDO threads can safely treat areas throughout the face and body. In the face, very small inexpensive threads can be used for a brow lift and to eliminate smokers lines and augment the lips. To “lift” sagging skin in the lower third of the face, jawline and neck, larger more expensive barbed threads are used. Common areas in the body where PDO threads reduce wrinkles and provide lift include the décolletage, stomach, buttocks and thighs.

What is the procedure like?

You will be evaluated by Dr. Kuhlman or Jodi Wilhelm, CNP to determine if you are a good candidate for PDO threads. Elderly people with poor skin elasticity usually do not improve as much. Your skin will be thoroughly cleaned and a topical numbing cream applied to the treatment area. Digital photographs will be obtained. Your skin will be marked in the area where the threads will be placed. The threads are then placed under the skin. Most people require several threads to be inserted for optimal results. A typical time-frame is 15 to 45 minutes.

Is the treatment comfortable?

There is minimal discomfort as a topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure.

Is there any downtime?

Mild swelling and bruising can occur. Ice and Arnica tablets for a few days will help. We ask that you not put pressure on the area for 24 hours and not receive a facial massage for one month. Most people can return to normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

When will I see results?

Because the inserted threads work by causing your body to make collagen, it can take several weeks to see the results for the smaller smooth threads. The larger barbed threads that “lift” your skin will show immediate improvement, but also continue to show further additional benefit for several weeks.

How long will the results last?

6 to 18 months depending on the type, size and number of threads used

What is the cost?

The cost varies considerably depending on the type, size and number of threads used. Vertical lips lines cost about $200-$300. Lower third face lift cost about $500-$750.
