Dermal Fillers

As we age, our skin becomes thinner and less elastic, and our muscles, fat pads and bones begin to shrink.  As a result, our facial contour changes from a youth with high cheeks and a small chin to an elderly person with flat cheeks and prominent jowls.  Sun damage, smoking, and habitual contraction of facial muscles will accelerate the aging process.

Dynamic wrinkles are produced by contracting the facial muscles and are most common in the upper one-third of the face, and usually improve with Botox injections.  Static wrinkles are present at rest and are most common in the lower two-thirds of the face, and usually improve with dermal fillers.

What are cosmetic dermal fillers?

Dermal cosmetic fillers are FDA approved injectable products that add volume, which can lift the face to prevent sagginess and smooth out lines and wrinkles.

What are dermal fillers used for?

Dermal fillers add volume to the areas of the face that was lost due to aging.  The most common areas of the face treated with fillers are the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, mental crease, cheek bones, lips and tear troughs.

How long do the fillers last?

That depends on the product given and the area injected. At Physical and Aesthetic Medicine we have a large variety of FDA approved fillers to meet your specific needs. Currently, all of the dermal fillers we offer last one to two years.

Is the treatment comfortable?

The injections usually cause mild discomfort.  Lidocaine is mixed with the filler to prevent discomfort.  Targeted nerve blocks and a topical anesthetic cream can also be applied.

Is there any down time?

Mild swelling and redness are expected but should resolve in one to three days.  Mild bruising can occur and may last seven to ten days.  Over the counter remedies such are Arnica montana can help speed recovery.

When will I see results?

Immediately.  The final result is usually seen a few days later after the swelling resolves.

Are the dermal fillers safe?

Yes. All of the fillers are FDA approved.  Mild swelling and bruising are common.  Infection or significant injury to the blood vessels are rare by possible side effects.

How much does it cost?

Dermal filler injections vary greatly depending on the filler chosen and the amount required.  Most dermal filler injections will cost over $500.
