Toenail Fungus

How does laser nail fungus treatment work?

Physical and Aesthetic Medicine uses an Nd:YAG laser to treat nail fungus.  The laser will send powerful energy through the nail to the nail bed and nail growth area, instantly killing the fungus.

What does the laser treatment feel like?

You may feel a warming or pressure sensation on the nail.  We do have a Zimmer cooling device that we will use simultaneously with the laser treatment to diminish discomfort.  No other aesthesia or numbing medication is necessary.

How long will the procedure take?

The first visit will require a brief consultation with Dr. Kuhlman or Jodi Wilhelm, CNP.  The actual laser treatment can be done in less than 15 minutes.

What is the success rate?

Laser treatment for toenail fungus has an 80% success rate.  In contrast, topical ointments are only 10-25% effective, and are very inconvenient as they need to be applied once or twice daily for up to 48 weeks. Oral medications have a higher success rate of about 50%, but can have serious side effects including liver damage that require blood tests. Laser treatment has no dangerous side effects.  It is important to remember that treating your toenail fungus does not mean you will not get it again.  You should avoid wet, moist environments such as public showers where your feet can be re-exposed.  You should throw away old socks and shoes that can re-infect your toenails.

Is it safe to paint my nails?

It is very important to remove all of the nail polish before the laser treatment.  After the laser treatment has been completed, you can safely polish your nails the next day.  However, it would be best to get a new bottle of polish so that you do not reinfect your nails.

Does health insurance cover laser treatment?

No, it does not.  This is considered “cosmetic” by most health insurance companies and thus is not covered.

How long will it take to see results?

The laser treatment will immediately kill the fungus but no visible change will be seen immediately as the nail will require several months to grow.

How much does the laser treatment cost?

We treat all ten toenails for a cost of $700 for 3 sessions separated a month apart.
